ArtDepot is pleased to announce the exclusive representation of Dutch artist Super A (Stefan Thelen) in Asia. Three years after their last collaboration, the gallery will present his first solo exhibition in Asia, "B Side," opening on March 14, 2026, at its Beijing space. The exhibition will feature over ten new paintings and sculptures, offering a cross-cultural visual dialogue within an Eastern context. “Super A”is the artist's self-created "anti-superhero" persona—an alter ego navigating inner turmoil. Through this lens, he traverses the surreal, deconstructing familiar cartoon icons into visual puzzles waiting to be solved.Contradiction runs through Super A's work. Fascinated by the characters who once inspired him, he attempts to discover new significance through reinterpretation. For him, the identities imposed by culture—the kind that defines "growing up" as leaving childhood behind and letting go of imagination—are simply not his to accept. This fascination with what lies beneath the surface finds a natural echo in "B Side"—a concept borrowed from the music industry. In the broader cultural context, the B-side has come to signify the secondary, the lesser half next to the A-side. But there's something about those overlooked surprises—they wait patiently in the shadows, biding their time. Sometimes, what hides beneath the surface is just as captivating as what commands the spotlight. Within Super A's works, forces constantly contend: essence and non-essence, center and periphery, fiction and reality, hero and anti-hero. He sees all forms as layered accumulations of gestures, emotions, impulses, impressions, and associations—stacked and intertwined. The artist's task, then, is to cut through the disguises reality has piled on, allowing the dormant B-side to finally emerge into light, visible at last. |
